It's a great time to be in the mobile tool business

Many Cornwell dealers have had their highest levels of purchases from us in 2011 and 2012, despite the fact that the overall economy is just limping along.

As someone interested in a career as a Cornwell dealer, you’re probably asking yourself these questions: - Is this a good time to start a business so heavily related to the auto business? - What is the outlook for the future?

While we don’t claim to have a crystal ball, there is plenty of evidence that the mobile tool business is solid now and will be for many years to come. Here are a few of the reasons we’re optimistic about the future.

First, repairs are in demand as people are hanging onto their vehicles for longer periods than ever before. This trend is expected to continue, according to data compiled by R.L. Polk, a global leader in market research.

In a study released in February 2012, Polk found that Americans are holding onto their new vehicles for a record 71.4 months. We’re even keeping our used cars for 49.9 months, which is also a new high.

Polk attributes the length of ownership to the improvement in quality and durability of modern cars and trucks, which makes it less risky to hang onto a vehicle for longer periods of time.

Second, the market is expanding as more and more specialty tools are introduced. Specialization requires that technicians keep up to date with the latest tools, including diagnostic tools. Finally, there continues to be a shortage of technicians. As new people enter this growing field, the demand for tools will increase. In the meantime, technicians who are working are feeling secure in their jobs and are busier than ever. And that’s when they’re comfortable buying the tools they need.

Polk believes it will be 2015 at the earliest before the annual sales volume will hit the 16-million level achieved prior to the recession. And there will still be millions of used cars that need to be serviced for years after that.

Indeed, we are optimistic about our business! We hope you’ll join us and have a great career you can be proud of.
